Are you poisoning your pet?
Is your dog food crazy people? Does your kitty like to self-medicate? Unfortunately, not everything that love is good for us. In fact, many common household goods that we take for granted as harmless can poison our furry friends. In 2009, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, IL, handled more than 140,000 cases of pets exposed to toxic household substances, including insecticides, cleaning products and medicines prescription.
Human Medicines
For several years, human medicines have been number one on the list from the ASPCA of common dangers, and 2009, was no exception. Last year, the ASPCA handled 45 816, involving prescription and nonprescription medications such as painkillers, cold medicines, the antidepressants and dietary supplements. Pets often snatch pill vials from counters and nightstands or gobble drugs accidentally dropped on the floor, making it essential drugs to keep hidden in the difficulty to reach the cabinets.
Insecticides
In our effort to combat the pest invasions unwanted home, often unwittingly put at risk our furry friends. In 2009, our toxicologists sent 29 020 calls related to pesticides. One of the incidents most common involved the diversion of fleas and ticks, such products applying the wrong topical treatment to the wrong species. People Food
People foods such as grapes, raisins, avocado and products containing xylitol, such as rubber, is a serious blocking our furry friends, and accounted for more than 17 453 cases in 2009. Plants
Common indoor plants were subjected to 7858 calls to APCC in 2009. Varieties like azalea, rhododendron, sago, lily, kalanchoe and schefflera often found in homes and can be harmful to pets. Lilies are especially toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure in life-threatening, even in small quantities.
Veterinary Drugs
Despite of veterinary medicines intended for animals, are often wrongly or badly taught by well-meaning pet owners. In 2009, the ASPCA handled 7680 cases related to animal-related preparations such as the anti-inflammatory drugs, heartworm preventative, de-wormers, antibiotics, vaccines and nutritional supplements.
Rodenticides
Last year, the ASPCA received 6639 calls about pets that had accidentally ingested rat and mouse poison. Many baits used to attract rodents contain inactive ingredients that are attractive to pets as well. Depending on the type of rodenticide ingested can cause life-threatening problems for pets including bleeding, seizures or kidney damage.
Household Cleaners
Everyone knows that cleaning supplies for the home can be toxic to adults and children, but few take precautions to protect their pets from common agents, such as bleach, detergents and disinfectants. Last year, the ASPCA received 4143 calls related to household cleaning. These products, when inhaled by our furry friends, can cause serious gastrointestinal discomfort and irritation of the airways.
Heavy metals
There is too much music loud which is our next offender pet poison. Instead, heavy metals like lead, zinc and mercury, representing 3304 cases of poisoning for pets in 2009. Lead is especially harmful, and pets are exposed to many sources, including consumer products, paint chips, linoleum, and lead dust is produced when surfaces in older homes are scraped or sand.
Garden Products
Can keep your grass green, but some types of fertilizer and garden products can cause problems for cats and dogs outside. Last year, the ASPCA sent 2329 exposure-related calls fertilizers that can cause severe gastric upset and possibly gastrointestinal obstruction.
Chemical Hazards
In 2009, the ASPCA handled approximately 2175 cases of exposure to chemical hazards pet. A category on the rise, chemical hazards, which in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, paint thinner, drain cleaners and pool / spa chemicals, are a major hazard for pets. Substances in this group can produce gastrointestinal upset, depression, respiratory problems and chemical burns.
