Miami Information and History

Introduction to Miami

Little known fact: the eighth day, God shook all the eccentrics States Nation united in the southeast corner pocket. And they became South Florida. And it is strange.

Here's how it works: cruising on I-95 from the corridor northeast and at some point, near Richmond, cross the invisible line separating North from South. Now go further, all the way to the tip of the United States. In some part around Orlando, which crossed another line, separating the rest of Florida from reality. Here in Miami, the Everglades and the Keys, things are a little Alice in Sweaty Wonderland. Is the time, you know, all the moisture and hurricanes bring us all a little crazy. And crocodiles. And the mosquitoes, damn them. And people, of course.

What once was an agricultural town of citrus is now a mosaic Pan, the northernmost city in the world of America of Mexico. Throw in immigrant entrepreneurs Caribbean, Jewish Holocaust survivors and their children, a fantabulous gay party scene, crazy rednecks, the cast off spawn of the dinosaur era cruising waterways local, and a scene of South Beach celebrity that would make OK! wee magazine in joy, and, well … Look guys: it is rare here. And beautiful. Think of the lines a thin clean deco hotel in Miami Beach. The incredibly sexy people queuing at a club in Fort Lauderdale. That love pale full moon to the Everglades on a wet and sweaty night.

That this Miami does not mean modern without problems. This city has so much power hungry happy and Third World edge of the Caribbean and Latin America. Economic inequality is widespread, and the great spirit of American capitalism has merged with the Miami Latin / Mediterranean flair, making the gap between rich and poor here seem particularly large.

But the bright mirage of wealth and sex is also what makes this city so much fun and fast. 'The World Is Yours "Was the motto emblematic Scarface, a movie that captures the highs and lows of the 1980s hyperextravagant of Miami, and the citizens of this city have taken that motto seriously.

West of here is the Everglades, perhaps the most unique ecosystem in North America, one of the flooded wetlands feels as its own musty womb of nature. To the north, Fort Lauderdale sips a martini by the fleets of yachts. To the south lie the mangrove islands and sandbars sensual Keys Florida, the islands of both exile and refuge for those mavericks who are too out there for the mentality gap even South Florida.

Sounds good? Come down. The air feels like a kiss of silk and the beach smells like lotion and hormones. Welcome to Miami. The match started five minutes ago. Will you dance?

History

Rest assured, that of Miami's visit today will be gone when you return.

This is a city built on the rise and fall, for dreamers who took advantage of good weather and the opportunists who took advantage of natural disasters. Each chapter in the saga of this city is closed by a hurricane, or riot-building boom, and when the dust settles a new Miami is left sizzling on the beach. That's an uneven growth rate, ironically, considering it took about 400 years of Miami to become a city (Ponce de Leon lost the source of youth). But when the people decided go big, playing catch-up with a vengeance.

In some ways, the history of Greater Miami is a classic American tale of displacement, the spirit business, the hopes of desperate refugees and innovation. But do not forget the footnotes: corruption, negligence, and full – and sometimes bloody – community divisions. The final product is almost perfect. But it also is the resurrection itself continuously, as new immigrants push low-rise housing, and the new rich reinvent the shining city of Miami.

Let's be clear: Miami still do not like Castro, so this is not the best place for your flash Che T-shirt. In the past, street parties in Little Havana have been set off by rumors of Fidel's ill health. When Rafael Del Pino, a Cuban defector former general, suggested some relaxation with his homeland in 2008, a call to Radio Mambi proposed that the highest ranking officer to arrive Castro the coasts of America lynched. Del Pino subsequently filed a lawsuit, which was promptly launched a federal court.

In 2008 Castro finally announced its intention to relinquish power. No doubt a justified retirement announcement party, at least one power delivery mojito? Nope. The reaction among Cuban exiles never exceeded a cautious optimism. Will brother and successor of Fidel, Raúl be a reformer? Delfin Gonzalez, Elian's famous uncle, told us: "Fidel, Raúl, who have the same mother. "

In 2008, the most recent wave of Cuban immigrants – the kind of work they have been coming to the United States since 1980 – Defines the face Public response from the community. They have little love for Castro, but are more concerned about making a better life for themselves, then settling of political accounts.

A Cuban waitress responded tersely the latest chapter in the chronicle of Fidel with these words: "I have no time for news." After returned to work.

The issue of legalizing slot machines constantly appear on the ballots of voters, but if it ever will in the local racetracks still nobody knows – For years the struggle has been shot down, was raised and discussed over and over ad nauseum. And as the debate the intricacies Miami the game, his parents are pressuring the city to complete the incorporation of Miami-Dade County in 2010. This would cause huge swaths of unincorporated county – including the area around the Everglades National Park – to fall under the control of the city. At issue: who would do a better job of managing the Miami-Dade? Commissioners County? City Council Members? Local governments? The logic behind the integration works like this: fall in Miami-Dade dozens of small cities governed by local councils, and councils will have a better idea of the needs of its constituents, particularly in poorer areas. But there are plenty of examples of the local councils with local connections to make a cut in real estate development, as opposed to infrastructure financing for the lower class.

Besides, who have time to worry about the poor when the South Florida Sun Sentinel estimated that one in 10 residents of Florida in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach is a millionaire (when include the value of their homes, cars and action)? Just drive the coast A1A condominium through a valley of the poor and middle-income households and re-emerge on the eastern edge of the Everglades, where new wetlands are rich in palaces staff size ego. To make matters worse, the original inhabitants of the region, the Seminoles, are busy preparing to convert their old tribal home in a Las Vegas style casino en bloc. This could be bad news for endangered species as the Florida panther, but wait, there's free drinks in the craps tables!

Money and costs

Costs

Miami's economy depends heavily on tourism, but its position as gateway to Latin America has given city status power of international business. More than 150 multinational companies with operations in Miami, including Burger King, Carnival Cruise Lines, and Citizen of financial savings, and at least 100 have their Latin American headquarters here in Johnson & Johnson into the breach. The city is also emerging as an international banking center, over 40 international banks call home. But leading the way is now the business of developing, making investors and builders to jump for joy.

While growth of the national economy is weaker many years, the Miami economy is booming. And that could mean higher prices for travelers. It is still possible to experience in Miami about $ 90 per day – $ 60 a room in a hostel, $ 20 on a combo dining and take away with the rest devoted to beverages and / or transport – but the reality is that you will be tempted to spend a little more to really enjoy your time here. Depending on the location and time of year, a nice hotel room is going to cost you at least $ 120, with its popular South Beach aims midrange goes for about $ 170 to $ 250. At the upper end of the spectrum, expect to pay between $ 400 to $ 1,000 per night. Then there is the food. The preponderance of ethnic cuisines, delis and diners means it is possible to find a meal for as little as $ 10 "But once you throw in the environment and alcohol you'll find it $ 10 just for a glass of wine and at least $ 25 per person for food. Other activities appeal to you too expensive: Nightclubbing, with entries about $ 20 and cocktails cost about $ 10 each, riding bikes, with an average rent of $ 20 per day, sky's will be applied -limit purchase; attractions for children as the Seaquarium and live entertainment and sporting events where ticket prices can cost between $ 15 to $ 100 or more. Expect to spend about $ 200 a week in a rental car – more if it is peak tourist season.

bargain seekers take note: while the museums do not charge an entry fee, usually around $ 5, many have free days or hours, including the Bass Museum of Art (18:00 to 21:00 on the second Thursday of the month), the Historical Museum of Southern Florida (Sunday) and Miami Art Museum (Sunday).

expect prices in general a little cheaper in the Keys, particularly when it comes to lodging and dining (although high-end restaurants, though not as ubiquitous as they are in Miami, charged both the same rates). Unfortunately, due to the Keys are islands, certain staples like water and gasoline may cost a dollar or so more than them on the continent.

Money

The U.S. dollar puppet puppet is the currency of the world these days, so come over and take advantage of our economic problems. The dollar is divided into 100 cents (100 cents) with pennies (penny), five cents (nickel), 10 cents (coin ten cents) 25 cents (quarters) and relatively rare 50 cents (half dollar).

Bank notes are called bills. Be sure to check the corners of quantities, as are all the same size and color. Distributed bills come in denominations of $ 1, $ 5, $ 10, $ 20, $ 50 and $ 100. U.S. has two designs of banknotes in circulation, but would have to study very closely to notice.

There are three simple ways to manage payments: cash, traveler dollar checks (as good as cash, but you may replace if lost or stolen) and credit / debit cards.

Money exchange

If you prefer cash, try to change much of their own country before arriving in Miami, as the exchange rates are notoriously here scarce. If you have to change money, do it in banks. Try Bank of America (305-350-6350), offering foreign exchange services in its branches – or change operations money, such as Thomas Cook (305-285-2348, 800-287-7362).
