How to stop kittens and cats jumping on the furniture?

I asked people in different ways out there taught their kittens and cats stay off the furniture. My sister just moved into a new apartment a few months ago and got a kitten last week. She has a new sofa and the cat will not stop jumping about it. My sister is worried the kitten cane. All ideas for her?

Take a spray bottle and spray some water every time the cat jumps on the furniture. Cats do not like water much, so soon learn that every time you get sprayed jumps on the furniture.
