Horse Tack – Which Martingale Should I Use?
There are two basic types of martingales, martingale standing and running martingale. Depending on your discipline and purpose, both have their place in your training repertoire.
Standing martingales are common in the hunter ring. They are legal for use over fences, but are not acceptable on the floor.
A standing martingale is a strap that goes from the noseband to the girth in place by a second strap that wraps around the neck. It is a passive support, ie the pilot has no active influence on their performance.
If a horse raises his head, or turn on the air, the martingale standing will be tight, preventing the action. In the Western world, a similar device called a tie.
While the martingale prevents the horse to lift his head high, not binding to the horse's head down. This in fact, interfere with the horse to jump, which would be foolish.
