Has anyone taught their dog to ring a bell when they need to go potty?

Does it actually work, and does the dog ring the bell just when he needs to go potty or when he just wants to go out and play?
I mean how do u get the dog to ring the bell to go potty, but not ring it to go out to play whenever he wants

We started this about 4 months ago and it works great. We don’t have a yard so our dogs ring it when they want to play and when they need to go potty. I don’t have a huge problem with this because it gives them a chance to let me know they need to go out and burn some energy. What my husband and I noticed is that they ring it differently for potty and play. For potty they ring it over and over rather fast and stay by the door. For play they tend to ring it once and then jump up and down or run to find us and then go back and ring it again.

To get them to start ringing it we put spray butter on it and sat by it. They would lick the butter (thus ringing the bell) and we would get really excited and run outside and give them treats. We did this about 10 times in a row every other day for about a week and now they do it.

I love it and it has made my life really easy because like I said we live in a condo and don’t have a yard. Good luck
