Many associate Australia with the known dry desertscapes the iconography of Australia well: Ayres Rock, interior and lots of dust cattle ranches. Queensland is different: the northern and eastern sections of Australia fall within the tropical zone.
A coastal drive from Cairns Port Douglas is a good way to experiment the best of what the region has to offer. In the United Kingdom, it is possible to fly directly to Brisbane. From there it easy to take a connecting flight to Cairns, the main hub in northern Queensland.

Port Douglas is a small idyllic community framed by the forested slopes, endless beaches and the Great Barrier Reef. The four-mile beach is a real attraction, of course, but many come here to see the reef and is on a cruise by day or by a supervised dive. Most of the reefs is a reserve designated marine unique in their scale of growth of corals and rich marine fauna (numerous species of fish, snakes, numerous sea). The so-called "holes wonky "feed these coral-rich waters with fresh nutrients that promote the growth of corals, but pollution from agriculture runoff is a constant and growing threat.
